June 8, 2016 — Moraga, Calif. BDK America, the U.S.-based publisher and promulgator of improved Buddhist understanding, encourages North American scholars to explore a special fellowship offered by Bukkyo Dendo Kyokai, the Society for the Promotion of Buddhism, in Japan.

"Before applications are open this Fall, we encourage Buddhist scholars to explore this unique opportunity now," Bill Teague, at BDK America, said. "The Fellowship for Foreign Scholars provides travel and living support to scholars to live and study in Japan for a full year." The program refers to foreign scholars (that is, of non-Japanese nationality) to distinguish it from a separate program that covers Japanese scholars, Teague explained.

The BDK Fellowship aims to promote international cooperation and mutual understanding in Buddhist studies, and is intended to enable researchers to engage in advanced research on Buddhism while in Japan.

In recent years, Bukkyo Dendo Kyokai has awarded two to three fellowships to emerging scholars in Europe and Asia annually, but the opportunity is open to all. "As a U.S.-based affiliate of Bukkyo Dendo Kyokai, BDK America encourages North American Scholars to explore this special opportunity," Teague said.

More information about this program appears on the Bukkyo Dendo Kyokai website. (See http://www.bdk.or.jp/english/about/financial/fellowship-2.html.)

Preferably applicants are advanced graduate students working toward a Ph.D. degree. Applicants must be of non-Japanese nationality, under 40 years of age, able to engage in the academic study of Buddhism in Japan for one year, and be affiliated with a Japanese university or research institute while in Japan.

To help potential candidates explore the fellowship more fully, BDK wants them to be aware of it well before applications begin to be accepted in three or four months from now, Teague said, "We would be very proud if one of the 2017 awardees were to come from an area represented by BDK America (covering the U.S. mainland), or our sister organizations, BDK Hawaii, BDK Canada, and BDK Mexico," Teague added.

The BDK Fellowship for Foreign Scholars is administered and conducted entirely by Bukkyo Dendo Kyokai in Japan. BDK America's role is to share this information, Teague said.
