Description

The All-pleasing: A Commentary on the Rules of Discipline (Ch. Shanjianü piposha) is a commentarial work dealing with the disciplinary rules for Buddhist monks, based on the Vinaya text Samantapāsădika. Translated by the Indian monk Sanghabhadra, assisted by the Chinese monk Sengyi, at Zhulin Temple, Guangzhou, in 428 C.E., the text includes many elements that are not in the original text or differ from it. Many passages are from the Dharmagupta-vinaya (Ch. Sifen li), one of the most influential versions of the Vinaya in East Asia, as well as from the Vinaya-pitaka and other Pali sources, including commentarial works. In addition, the translators supplemented their translation with terms, definitions, and enumerations to make the content more familiar to and readily understandable by Chinese readers.

The All-pleasing closely follows the Samantapāsă-dikä’s structure and content, divided into eighteen fas-cicles. This text has an important place in the Chinese Buddhist canon, valued as source material that can verify the interpretation of Pali commentaries in general and clarity certain difficult and obscure passages found in the Samantapāsădikã. Due to the length of the text, this English translation is published in two volumes:Volume I includes Fascicles 1-9; Volume II contains Fascicles 10-18
