BDK America Reopens Orders for The Teaching of Buddha

Our Most Popular Book Again Available

Thanking You for Your Patience

Moraga, Calif.  January 3, 2018 — BDK America reopens orders for The Teaching of Buddha, the popular compilation of the basic teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha.

One month ago BDK America, a not-for-profit publisher and Buddhist society, closed orders to be able to handle over two weeks' worth of orders that came in a single day and showed no sign of letting up. The staff realized the winter break was coming up and they needed to take care of existing orders in the limited time remaining.

Such a surge of orders is the happy result of the rapid sharing of information on the Internet. That is, the information about our offer — Buddhist teachings sent free anywhere in the continental United States — was spread widely and enthusiastically on several websites.

Future Closures Always a Possibility. To do its best possible job of sending out accepted orders in a timely fashion, BDK America will monitor orders and may have to temporarily pause orders in future. We regret this accommodation of a new reality that we never had to deal with in earlier times. We apologize to visitors excited about our offer only to find they cannot order a book when they want it. Occasional pauses allow us to operate and fulfill our mission given limited resources of materials and staffing. We greatly appreciate the patience and understanding of our many visitors.

The Fine Print

Unsolicited publicity about our offers sometimes misses some details, which we would like to make clear. Specifically, our free publications are not free under all circumstances.

  • Geographic Restrictions. We are unable to honor orders outside the continental United States even if the person ordering would pay for the shipping. For requests from outside the continental United States for the free books, we refer the requestor to BDK organizations serving other regions.
  • Quantity Restrictions. Last year we modified our policy such that individuals were limited to two free copies in their order; there is an option to add one, two, or three more copies subject to a single shipping charge.
  • Institutional Orders. Recognizing that schools, hospitals, temples, hotels, and study centers may have legitmate needs as well, we have recently opened an institutional catalog. If you are representing such an institution, visit the site and make an order in quantity. Explain your group and request in the comments section of the order, and we will review.
  • Right to Refuse.  We attempt to fill all requests where possible, but we reserve the right to not fill all orders on occasion. .

Temporary Holds Do Not Prevent Access to our Books for Sale or PDF Downloads

In addition to the free publication, The Teaching of Buddha, BDK America works with BDK Japan to publish volumes in the BDK English Tripitaka series. Sale of these books are not affected by temporary closures on The Teaching of Buddha. Parties interested in these publications are encouraged to browse our Tripitaka catalog. When the user clicks to add a volume to a shopping cart, the website transfers them to the University of Hawaii Press, our partner in handling sales of volumes in the series. Many of the publications are also available as free PDF downloads, and may be accessed from our downloads listing. Also available as PDF downloads are selected other publications, including the mini-bookletsA Teaching a Day and Messages from the Buddha.
